Capitals 2 Hurricanes 0

The Caps home opener was a continuation of the good play from Game 1 in Atlanta. The Caps dominated the Canes with excellent puck control. If Carolina goalie, John Grahame, wasn't on his game it would have been a lot worse. Alex Ovechkin scored a goal in the first period off of a beautiful pass from Viktor Kozlov. Kozlov skated the puck into the offensive zone drawing 3 Carolina defenders and slipped a pass to Ovechkin who buried it behind Grahame. The second goal came on the power play from Milan Jurcina who took a feed from Alexander Semin and fired a wrist shot that deflected off a defenseman and under the goalie.

Of Note:
  • Alex Ovechkin's 99th career goal was also his 200th career point. He passes Scott Stevens for 22nd on the Caps All-Time Goals list.
  • Nicklas Backstrom recorded his second assist on Jurcina's goal.
  • The Caps out shot Carolina 33-23. Ovechkin led the team with 6 shots on goal. Carolina had only 2 shots in the first period.
  • The Caps scored a power play goal for the second consecutive game. The penalty killers have not allowed a goal in all 8 opportunities this season.
  • Olie Kolzig recorded his 35th career shut out. He made an acrobatic save in the third period stopping a back door pass as the Canes attempted to get back into the game.
  • The games three stars were 1 Kolzig, 2 Ovechkin, and 3 Kozlov
