Capitals 1 Penguins 2

The Capitals played a decent game on Saturday but just can't seem to put everything together yet. Through the early part of this season the Caps have lacked point production, especially on the power play. They are averaging an anemic 2 goals per game and have 4 power play goals in 34 chances (11.8%) and that just doesn't cut it at this level. As of late the penalty kill has been porous. Allowing 9 goals in the last 25 chances. Of course it doesn't help that they have had to defend a 5 on 3 advantage in 5 consecutive games. In the second period against Pittsburgh they were in the box 4 times for minor penalties and Pittsburgh scored the game winning goal on the last one. When you give a team with that much skill that many chances the odds are not going to be in your favor. The overall effort is there the Caps just need to put it together.

Of Note:
  • Alex Ovechkin's point streak was ended at 6 games. He had 8 shots on goal, 5 hits, 2 takeaways and a blocked shot.
  • Brian Pothier scored the Caps goal in the first period 13 seconds after Sergei Gonchar had returned from the penalty box.
  • Nicklas Backstrom recorded his 5th assist of the season.
  • The Caps were 0 for 3 on the power play and are 0 for 9 in their last 2 games.
  • Boyd Gordon returned to action after missing 3 games with back spasms.
  • Brent Johnson played extremely well in goal giving up 2 goals on 22 shots.
  • The Caps recorded their first 2 fighting penalties of the year with Donald Brashear taking on George Laraque and Matt Pettinger fighting Jordan Staal.
  • Jordan is the second Staal to record his first NHL fight against a Capital. Brother Eric's first fight was with former Cap Jeff Halpern in the 2005-06 season.
