Game #17 Recap: Caps 2 Buffalo 3 (OT)

Washington came out of the first period with the lead for the first time in a long time. Karl Alzner scored his first goal of the season when he blistered a slap shot into the net against last season's Vezina Trophy winner, Ryan Miller. It was Alzner's first goal in forever and a day but make you think he should shoot a little more. The second period was brutal for the Caps. The team got only 4 shots on the net took 3 penalties and allowed 2 goals. Head Coach Bruce Boudreau was not happy and shook up all the lines. Midway through the third period Nicklas Backstrom tied the score at 2-2. Backstrom committed a 4-minute hi sticking penalty with 2:54 left in the game. The Caps killed off the penalty time to finish off regulation time and 1:06 of 4-on-3 to start the overtime. Thomas Vanek ended the game for Buffalo when he took the puck and went through the Caps two defensemen, avoided the goalie's poke check and backhanded the game-winning-goal for a highlight reel finish. The Caps will try to regroup at 5:00 on Sunday against the Thrashers.

Of Note:
  • Braden Holtby stopped 24 of 27 shot he faced including several glove saves that were incredible. The Capitals have to happy about the depth of talent in the goalie pipeline for the team.
  • Karl Alzner's goal extends the Caps defensemen goal scoring streak to 7-games. It was Alzner's first goal of the season. Alexander Semin extended his scoring streak to 7-games with the only assist.
  • The Capitals went 0 for 1 on the power play for the second consecutive game. They allowed 1 goal on 7 attempts by the Sabres.
  • Nicklas Backstrom's tying goal was his 5th goal of the season. Jason Chimera and John Erskine assisted.
