Capitals 4 Senators 1

For Washington Capitals fans it seemed like a small miracle. The last place Caps defeated the Ottawa Senators who entered the game with the best start in NHL history. Washington breaks its 4-game losing streak with a dominant effort that never let the powerful Sens offense off the ground. After a scoreless first period, Victor Kozlov started his second period scoring spree with a goal beating Ottawa's Ray Emery with a beautiful 1-on-1 move. Kozlov setup Nicklas Backstrom's first career NHL goal on a wrap around move. Backstrom crashed the net and put away the rebound. Kozlov then stole the puck and fed Tomas Fleischmann on the right wing, who snapped a shot past Emery. Kozlov recorded 3 points in the period. Alex Ovechkin finished off the scoring in the third period beating Emery on a 2-on-1 rush with Brooks Laich.

Of Note:
  • There was a European flavor in the goal scoring as the Caps got goals from 2 Russians, a Swede, and a Czech and Ottawa's goal was from another Swede.
  • Olie Kolzig was superb in the net stopping 27 of 28 shots including a break away 8 seconds into the game.
  • The Caps out shot Ottawa 35 to 28. The shots were more evenly distributed through the game with 10 in the 1st, 16 in the second, and 9 in the third.
  • Penalties were still an issue but the Caps were able to hold the Sens off the board in 5 power play attempts, including 1:04 of 5-on-3. The Caps were 1 for 4 on the power play.
  • Alex Ovechkin led all shooters with 10 shots on goal giving him 902 for his career. In 179 career games, that gives him an average of 5.04 shots per game. He is on pace to record 436 shots this season.
  • For his effort, Victor Kozlov was named Third Star of the Day by the NHL.
  • Michal Nylander Recorded 2 assists in the game. Brroks Laich and Shaone Morrisonn also recorded assists.
  • Ovechkin who also assisted on Kozlov's goal now has 216 points with the Capitals tying him with Dainius Zubrus for 27th on the Caps all-time points list.
