Capitals 1 Thrashers 2 (OT)

The Capitals came out strong against Atlanta last night recording 16 shots on goal in the first period. The team seemed to put the Monday blow out loss to Carolina away and played a focused 60-minutes of hockey. Too bad it wasn't 61:43, but the did come away with 1 standings point as they fell 2-1 in overtime. They again took too many penalties but were able to kill off all 6 Atlanta power plays and score on one of their own. Chris Bourque made his NHL debut and Steve Eminger made his season debut for the Caps. Tom Poti also returned to the ice after missing 6 games with a groin injury. Overall, a much better effort but now they head to Ottawa to face the best team in the Eastern Conference on Thursday.

Of Note:
  • The Caps out shot Atlanta 32 to 31 with half their shots coming in the first period.
  • Michal Nylander scored on the power play from Nicklas Backstrom and Viktor Kozlov. The team was 1 for 4 on the night.
  • This was the first overtime game the Caps have played this season.
  • Boyd Gordon was called for a hooking penalty in the 2nd period. It was the 14th penalty of his career in 149 games.
  • For only the 4th time this season the Caps did not lead in face-offs won. They won 21 of 49 (43%) of the draws.
  • In the last 4 games the Caps have scored a combined 3 goals and have been shut out twice.
  • Viktor Kozlov had 5 shots on goal giving him 1903 in his career. In the last 6 games he has taken 27 shots.
