Preseason Game #1 Recap - Capitals 4 Hurricanes 1

The Capitals won their first preseason match up in convincing fashion last night. The much maligned Tomas Fleischmann had an outstanding effort. The winger scored two power play goals and led the team to a 4-1 victory over the Canes. The team is hopeful that this season will be a breakout year for Fleischmann. Was this performance due to him stepping up to the challenge or him actually feeling comfortable with the situation and performing as he knows how? Personally, I think it has to do with the 29 numerals he shaved of his jersey number. He went from a heavy, slow 43 to a sleek 14. Whatever the difference we hope to see more of the same from Flash.

Of Note:
  • Simeon Varlamov had a good first outting stopping all 20 shots he faced in the first period. Darren Machesney played the second and third periods giving up one goal on eleven shots and the goal against came with the Canes on a 5-on-3 power play.
  • Matt Bradley scored a goal as did Mathieu Perrault.
  • Viktor Kozlov had 2 assists and John Carlson, one of the Caps 2008 draft picks, recorded his first assist. Other players recording assists were Quintin Laing, Milan Jurcina, Alexandre Giroux, and Michael Nylander.
  • The Carolina off-ice officials love to dole out the hit stats. They recorded 29 hits for the Caps and 42 for the Canes. No wonder Erik Cole was always among the league leaders in that stat.
  • The Caps were 2 for 3 on the power play and allowed 1 goal on 6 Carolina attempts.
  • The 3 Stars of the Game: 1. Fleischmann, 2. Varlamov, 3. Kozlov.
